Upcoming Condo Conversion Hearings
On Wednesday, Councilmembers Ed Reyes and Herb Wesson announced several joint committee hearings of the Planning & Land Use Management Committee (PLUM) and the Housing, Community & Economic Development Committee (HCED) this month to gather public comment on the issue of loss of rental units to condo and other for-sale conversions.  A press release issued by Wesson and Reyes announced that since 2001, 9,240 units have been removed from rent control and 3,100 units have been approved by the Planning Department for conversion.
These hearings have been set to help the Council committees (1) determine whether there is a problem, (2) the nature of any problem, and (3) options that should be considered in addressing any option.  These meetings could result in discussion of a myriad of other housing issues, including rent control.  CCA has long advocated against rent control and other housing impediments, as these policies hurt much-needed investment and result in greater disparity in the short and long-term.  CCA will continue advocating for innovative, incentive-based solutions. For more information on CCA's policy, please visit CCA's website for the 2004  " Housing For All: Fair Share Plan."
CCA's Housing, Land Use & Development Committee will discuss the condo conversion issue more fully at the scheduled meeting on May 10th. (Note:  This meeting may run past 9 a.m.)
The City hearings are scheduled as follows:

(NOTE:  This hearing will open with a panel discussion featuring representatives from the CRA and Departments of Housing, Building & Safety, and Planning.)
