LAUSD Superintendent; Newly-Elected School Board Members Discuss School District Reform With CCA

LAUSD Superintendent David L. Brewer, III joined CCA members on May 17th to discuss his vision for the School District and ways the business community can help improve LAUSD.  The School Board appointed Mr. Brewer to run the District in October 2006.  Newly-elected School Board members Tamar Galatzan (District 3), Yolie Flores Aguilar (District 5), and Richard Vladovic (District 7), all of whom CCA endorsed, also took the stage and discussed innovative reform measures they plan to implement once in office.

CCA looks forward to working with these committed leaders and implementing solutions that respond to the critical needs of LAUSD students, parents, teachers, and the whole Los Angeles community.  CCA is a strong advocate for education reform and better preparing Los Angeles' students for the workforce.   CCA also welcomed School Board Member  Monica Garcia (District 2) to the event.

Ellis Item Second Hearing: May 22nd

On May 22nd, the Los Angeles City Council will consider extending rent control to newly-constructed rental buildings constructed on sites of demolished rent stabilized apartment units ("Ellis Item").  If this measure succeeds, it would be the first time rent control would extend to new construction.

On May 22nd, the Los Angeles City Council will consider extending rent control to newly-constructed rental buildings constructed on sites of demolished rent stabilized apartment units ("Ellis Item").  If this measure succeeds, it would be the first time rent control would extend to new construction.

The measure would give the developer the option of constructing a new, rent stabilized building (where rent control would extend to every unit, regardless of size of demolished building), or replacing the lost rent stabilized units one for one with units that would be affordable to those earning 80% of AMI or less, up to 20% of the total building units.   CCA opposes the extension of rent control to any new construction.

Please help us oppose this item at the May 22 City Council meeting, which will take place Tuesday, May 22 at 10:00 a.m. in the City Council Chambers , City Hall Room 340.

 • CCA's Housing, Land Use & Development Committee  voted in support of Houk Development's Park Fifth Project, a proposed development that will include the tallest residential tower west of Chicago.   The Committee also discussed and took action on a proactive list of recommendations to increase investment in CRA areas, which CCA will soon submit to the CRA Board of Commissioners.

• CCA Legislative Affairs is very excited to welcome two new team members: Director of Government Affairs, Tracey Chavira, formerly with Councilmember Zine's office, and Director of Legislative & Legal Affairs, Anh Nguyen, formerly with Councilmember Parks' office.  Tracey and Anh bring extensive experience in public policy, legal analysis, and the City's legislative process.

CCA IN THE NEWS

"'The issue isn't about closing a loophole,' said Veronica Perez Becker, a vice president of the Central City Assn. 'The city made the policy decision in 1978 not to extend rent control to new construction. This would give those already hesitant to invest in the city another reason to stay away.'" May 16, L.A. Times , " Panel Urges Rent Control Expansion ," by Steve Hymon.

"Newly elected board members Tamar Galatzan and Richard Vladovic and current members Yolie Flores Aguilar and Monica Garcia joined with Brewer at a membership meeting of the Central City Association and pledged to cut bureaucracy and partner with the business community to improve the schools and dismal graduation rates." May 18,  Los Angeles Daily News , " New LAUSD Reform Team Joins Brewer ," by Naush Boghossian.
