CCA's Government Relations Committee Votes on November Ballot Measures
CCA's Government Relations Committee took action on the November City and State Ballot measures and will present their recommendations to CCA's Executive Committee next week. These positions will
not
be official until the Executive Committee takes action on these matters. CCA's Government Relations Committee focuses on building and maintaining strong ties between the business and government communities. The committee recently recommended endorsing
Councilmember Greig Smith's
re-election bid.
The committee voted to support the following measures:
Proposition 1a-1e
(Statewide Infrastructure Bond),
Proposition 84
(Water Quality Bond), and
Measure J
(Regional Fire Stations). CCA believes Proposition 1a-1e and Proposition 84 will provide important and necessary funding for statewide infrastructure that is long overdue. These measures are important for Los Angeles, which is set to receive a substantial portion of the money. The committee also supported
Measure J
, which will allow the L.A. Fire Department to build operable fire stations on smaller, denser sites that are more cost-effective and compatible with an urban setting.
The committee voted to oppose the following measures:
Proposition 87
(Alternative Energy / Tax on Oil),
Proposition 88
(Education / Parcel Tax),
Proposition 90
(Eminent Domain) and
Proposition 89
(Campaign Financing). It was the committee's opinion that these measures could further aggravate California's already tenuous business climate.
The committee's decision on
Measure R
regarding term limits for City Councilmembers and City ethics laws is still pending. The committee will meet next week to decide on this matter before meeting with the full Executive Committee.
Next Week's Arts & Education Committee: Public Schools in Downtown
On September 6th, CCA's Arts & Education Committee will be joined by special guest
Richard Alonzo
,
LAUSD Local District 4 Superintendent
, who oversees schools in and around Downtown. Mr. Alonzo will discuss several local school projects, as well as the future of the LAUSD in Downtown.
CCA has been actively working to enhance educational opportunities Downtown, in an effort to encourage neighborhood building and families in the City Center. Mr. Alonzo has been a leading innovator in the School District, supporting large-scale construction and new curricular models. CCA believes this meeting will open an important dialogue between the Downtown real estate, development and non-profit communities and the public school district.

• CCA staff testified in support of plan modifications for CCA member The South Group's Figueroa South mixed-use development project.
• President & CEO Carol Schatz along with CCA member, Kate Bartolo of the Kor Group, met with Councilmember Bernard Parks to discuss the negative ramifications of a condo conversion ICO. Councilmember Parks stated that he does not condone a moratorium and would like to work on increasing homeownership opportunities in the City of Los Angeles.
• President & CEO Carol Schatz along with other CEOs of business organizations were invited to meet with Councilmembers Parks and Wesson regarding a motion to attract and retain more businesses in Los Angeles. CCA provided the Councilmembers with examples of problems encountered when attempting to conduct business in the City, with the hope that Los Angeles becomes a more business friendly environment.
