CCA President & CEO Carol Schatz participates in panel discussion at the 2006 Mayoral Housing Summit
CCA's Schatz is Panelist at 2006 Mayoral Housing Summit
The Mayoral Housing Summit is an important gathering for Los Angeles' business and development communities. Last year at the 2005 Mayoral Housing Summit, the Mayor announced his support for a $1 billion housing bond. CCA has been advocating for this bond for more than two years and is excited to see the initiative on the ballot this November. CCA will be hosting a fundraiser in support of the bond measure on September 29th.
CCA's President & CEO
Carol E. Schatz
participated in a panel discussion this week at the 2006 Mayoral Housing Summit. Commenting that Downtown's revitalization, through the adaptive reuse program, has been successful because it has been
incentive-
driven, Schatz emphasized that the only way to improve Los Angeles is through market-driven strategies that work, instead of onerous interim control ordinances that have the reverse impact of driving business and jobs out of Los Angeles. Advocating against the increasing number of emergency ICOs in the City has been a top priority for the Central City Association.
Joining Schatz on the panel were
Gail Goldberg
, Director of City Planning;
Councilmember Wendy Greuel
;
Mercedes Marquez
, General Manager of the Los Angeles Housing Department; CCA member
Greg McWilliams
, President of
Newhall Land and Lennar Urban,
Western U.S.; Dan Palmer, Jr., Las Lomas; Andy Wilch, Director of Housing of the Portland Development Commission; and CCA member and principal at the
CIM Group
,
John Given
. CCA member
Greg Vilken
, President of
Forest City Development
, moderated the panel.
CCA members
Bill Witte,
President of the
Related Companies of California
, and
Jeff Lee
, President of the
Lee Group
, also participated in the Summit.
CCA's Transportation & Infrastructure Committee Hears Plans from BNSF and CRA
CCA's Transportation & Infrastructure Committee met this week for a presentation from Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway regarding their Southern California International Gateway Project (SCIG) and to hear updates from the Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) regarding the CRA Parking Management Study and Los Angeles Red Car Trolley Feasibility Study.
Trini Jimenez
,
Director of Government Affairs at BNSF Railway for Southern California
discussed the development and operation of a proposed new near-dock intermodal rail facility that would be located between Sepulveda Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway in a heavily industrialized area with direct access to the Alameda Corridor. This new, privately-funded facility would increase use of the Alameda Corridor and will allow cargo to be loaded onto rail lines much closer to the port complex, traveling less than a mile by rail to the Alameda Corridor. SCIG would help reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic safety while also incorporating environmentally friendly practices and technology, such as electric cranes.
Also at this meeting,
Lillian Burkenheim
, CRA Project Manager for the Downtown Region, and
Allyn Rifkin
, formerly Chief of the Planning Bureau at LADOT, and now a consultant with CRA, discussed the CRA's Parking Management Study. CCA has been working closely with the CRA on this study, which is critical to Downtown stakeholders as it deals with Downtown parking requirements and policy, to ensure that the parking concerns of all Downtown stakeholders are addressed.
Curtis Gibbs
from the CRA also discussed the recent release of the Los Angeles Red Car Trolley Feasibility Study. The study, created with input from CCA and other Downtown business and neighborhood leaders, lays options for planning, building and funding a Red Car Trolley line that would link major Downtown destinations.
