OCTOBER 17
HOUSING, LAND USE & DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE:  Special Guest:  Ms. Cecilia Estolano, CEO of the Community Redevelopment Agency

Carol Schatz, President & CEO of CCA and DCBID, honors the hard work of Los Angeles' public safety officers.  (See article "DCBID and CCA Honor L.A.'s Public Safety Officers" below)
CCA's Housing Bond Fundraiser a Success
Thanks to the generous hosts of CCA's fundraiser for Measure H, the $1 billion citywide housing bond, the event was a huge success.  Hosts Wells Fargo and Bank of America along with Weston Benshoof and King's Seafood , made generous contributions to a campaign that will make housing more affordable to Angelenos.  CCA would like to thank the hosts of the fundraiser and all of the contributors who have made generous donations to this campaign.
Joined by Council President Eric Garcetti and Councilmember Wendy Greuel at the Water Grill, the event honored the work that the business community did to initiate the housing bond measure two years ago, and outlined the campaign in the month ahead.  This bond measure will provide $100 million each year for ten years to fund affordable housing projects and financial assistance programs.  The measure came out of a CCA working group on affordable housing in 2004.  The group proposed a $500 million housing bond in CCA's 2004 "Housing For All: Fair Share Plan."
Both Greuel and Garcetti emphasized the importance of this bond in easing traffic problems in the City and providing opportunities for low and middle income families to buy homes.  Both noted, however, that much needs to be done to get this measure approved in November.  On a ballot laden with bond measures, it is critical that the campaign have sufficient funds to advertise in October.   The campaign is halfway to its goal of contributions needed to win in November.  To donate to this campaign, please visit "Homes for L.A. Families."
DCBID and CCA Honor L.A.'s Public Safety Officers
With a crowd of more than 1,000, the Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID) with the support of CCA and numerous sponsors, hosted a barbeque in recognition of the hard work that the LAPD, LAFD, CHP, LADOT, FBI, Sheriff's Department and other public safety personnel do in support of the Downtown community.  The barbeque featured special guests County Sheriff Lee Baca , Councilmember Jan Perry , LAPD Chief William Bratton, LAPD Assistant Chief Jim McDonnell, LAFD Chief Hill, and  LAPD Central Division Captain Andy Smith .  Sheriff Baca honored two DCBID security officers, Marion Barker and Pedro Lares , for their bravery during an incident in which one of his sheriffs was being overtaken.
In addition, President & CEO Carol Schatz presented the L.A. County Sheriff's Department with a $5,000 check, made possible by donations from over 35 Downtown business, to the Sheriff's Youth Foundation (see photo above).  Held at Ernst & Young Plaza with live music and generous lunch donations from California Pizza Kitchen and Arnie Morton's The Steakhouse, CCA and the DCBID would like to thank  Trizec Properties , Arnie Morton's The Steakhouse, and California Pizza Kitchen for hosting the event and all of the sponsors for their generous support.

L.A.P.D. Skid Row Enforcement Guidelines at Council
CCA's President & CEO Carol Schatz and CCA members Tom Gilmore of  Gilmore Associates , Alex Moradi of ICO Development , Adlai Wertman of Chrysalis , Warren Currie of Union Rescue Mission , and numerous Downtown stakeholders went to City Hall on Tuesday to comment on the City's move to place guidelines on LAPD enforcement activity in Skid Row.  The City Attorney listened to public input and will return to Council in two weeks with guidelines for the Council's consideration.  CCA wants to ensure the guidelines have sufficient input from Downtown stakeholders.
This has been a heated issue since the Council rejected an L.A.P.D. - ACLU settlement agreement on the "No Sit, Sleep, Lie" law last week.  CCA advocated in opposition to the settlement agreement and with the strong leadership of Councilmember Jan Perry, helped convince the Council to reject the settlement.

• CCA staff testified in support of Supervisor Antonovich's motion for an additional 50 beds for mental health.

• CCA staff along with CCA members Kate Bartolo, KOR Group, and Sheri Bonstelle, Jeffer Mangels, met with Councilmember Rosendahl and other stakeholders to discuss the potential negative ramifications of his proposed interim control ordinance on condo conversions.

• CCA's Entertainment Committee met with special guests Steve MacDonald of Film LA and Jim Fitzpatrick with MPAA to discuss current issues affecting film production in the Downtown region.

• CCA's Economic Development Committee met to discuss the future of the condominium market in Downtown L.A. with special guests from CondoSource.

• President & CEO Carol Schatz attended the 125th Anniversary celebration of the L.A. Times

CCA IN THE NEWS

"In this city, we hear about the D-word: density," Carol Schatz, president of the Central City Association and the Downtown Center Business Improvement District, told the Council. "We hear about the G-word: gentrification. I want to introduce to you today the H-word: hypocrisy. If any of you would say that you would agree to have tents and camps... on the public sidewalk in front of your home, people peeing and pooping and probably shooting up, then go ahead and vote for the settlement." Sept. 22, Downtown News, " Council Rejects Street-Sleeping Settlement," by Kathleen Nye Flynn.

"'We want a situation where there are no encampments whatsoever, but we know that some enforcement guidelines are going to be required,' said Carol Schatz, president of the Central City Association, an organization that has tried to revitalize downtown Los Angeles." Sept. 29, NBC News, "Homeless Encampment Plan Gets 90-Day Trial."
