Skid Row Housing Trust is replacing the current Edward Hotel located at 713 E. 5th Street with a new building containing 50 affordable housing units and onsite services. The proposed affordable housing project would fully replace and improve upon the 46 existing on-site single room occupancy (SRO) units, by providing in-unit kitchens and bathrooms adequate for independent living, and various residential amenities including common exterior and interior open areas. The existing building includes a common kitchen on the first floor and a common bathroom on each floor and does not contain supportive services. In addition, the existing building would require substantial retrofits to bring it up to current building standards. The residents would also be able to utilize on-site support services. “A Bridge Home” Update
In 2018, Mayor Garcetti launched “A Bridge Home” as an initiative to provide bridge housing to homeless individuals while permanent housing is being developed. Bridge housing is a temporary facility constructed on City-owned or leased properties. Bridge housing offers 24/7 security and on-site services like case management, mental health care, substance abuse treatment, and housing placement. Every Council District that builds bridge housing will receive additional sanitation resources in the areas around those facilities. To date, three facilities have been opened: El Puente in DTLA, Schrader in Hollywood and Casa Azul in Westlake. CCA members are invited to hear about new locations opening soon and the overall progress of the initiative.
