Leaked Audio Recording & Today's Cancelled LA City Council Meeting

Published Wednesday, October 12, 2022 2:50 pm

Today, the LA City Council's meeting could not go forward because of the necessary protests calling for Councilmembers Gil Cedillo, Kevin de León and Nury Martinez's resignations over the harmful, divisive comments made during a leaked recording of a conversation with former LA County Federation of Labor President Ron Herrera. Herrera rightly resigned on Monday and Councilmember Martinez announced her resignation today. CCA condemned these remarks and calls for Councilmembers Cedillo and de León to resign immediately.

This breach of trust is preventing LA's local government from moving forward on legislation, and importantly, solving our serious issues of homelessness, lack of housing and community safety. Downtown Los Angeles especially continues to suffer from the lack of leadership from our Council District 14 Representative -- first from former Councilmember Huizar and now Councilmember De León.

CITY COUNCIL'S RESPONSE

At yesterday's City Council meeting, councilmembers introduced the following motions in response to the leaked audio and the need for reforms.

  • Council President Election: On Tuesday, 10/18 the City Council will hold an election to select a new president. The Council President appoints committee chairs and sets agendas. The council president also acts as mayor whenever the mayor is out of town. Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell is currently Council President following Councilmember Nury Martinez's resignation from the post on Monday.
  • Governance Reform: Councilmembers introduced motions related to structural governance reform to curb future abuses of power. Councilmember Nithya Raman introduced a motion calling for an Ad Hoc Committee on City Governance Reform and Councilmember Mitch O'Farrell introduced a motion to take the necessary steps to establish a truly independent Redistricting Commission so that City Council boundaries can be established without political influence.

NEXT STEPS

If you would like to take immediate action, you can submit a letter or email written comments to Councilmembers Paul Krekorian, Mike Bonin, Nithya Raman, Mitch O'Farrell or Curren Price regarding their motion of support for resignation and calling for censure of Cedillo, De León and Martinez.

CCA will remain engaged on these needed actions and bring forth direct, detailed plans to help improve our city's government and encourage a more inclusive, representative city that serves all its constituents. We urge members to vote in the upcoming General Election. Ballots are in the mail. The last day to vote in the General Election is November 8.
