LOS ANGELES (August 16, 2023) – Central City Association of Los Angeles (CCA), the premier advocacy organization for the Los Angeles region, and Downtown Works (DTWX), which promotes public engagement and understanding of Downtown’s opportunities, announced today that they will be hosting CULTURE BREAK, a series of lunchtime live musical and artistic performances at locations near Metro stations.
Free and open to the public, CULTURE BREAK will take place on Wednesdays from noon to 1 p.m., beginning August 23. The performances are intended to encourage LA Metro ridership for Downtown workers, residents and visitors to discover local restaurants and businesses and experience local music and art.
CULTURE BREAK performances will be produced by NXT Art, a public art organization that revitalizes physical and social landscapes through creative installations, and in collaboration with dublab, a community-supported internet radio station and creative collective dedicated to the growth of positive music, arts and culture.
The August 23 performance will be across the street from the new Little Tokyo/Arts District Station at the Japanese American National Museum Plaza, 100 North Central Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Metro riders can take the Metro A/E Line to the Little Tokyo/Arts District Station.
Performing live will be Dengue Fever, Los Angeles recording artists known for their unique musical hybrid of Cambodian rock, Afro grooves, surf, and garage music. Puppeteers for the Bob Baker Marionette Theater, the oldest children’s theater in Los Angeles, will bring a lively “dance choreography” to accompany the live music. Calder Greenwood, a locally based sculpture artist, will create unique works from found and recycled materials.
“CULTURE BREAK is a performance series that will express the rich diversity of DTLA by providing live music and eclectic artistic performances for people working, visiting, and living in Downtown,” said CCA President and CEO Nella McOsker. “Over the next four weeks, we will host CULTURE BREAK performances at locations adjacent to Metro stations to encourage the community to take transit, celebrate Metro’s three new underground stations, experience unique entertainment and enjoy lunch from one of DTLA’s amazing restaurants.”
The Little Tokyo/Arts District Station, which is adjacent to the location of the first CULTURE BREAK, is one of three new underground stations that opened in June, and was part of the Regional Connector transit project. The 1.9-mile underground rail connector makes it possible for light rail trains to travel between Union Station and the busy 7th Street/Metro Center Station in Downtown’s Financial District.
In addition to hosting CULTURE BREAK to help celebrate the new Metro stations, CCA has called on other members of the business community and the traveling public to support transit by making the #GoMetroPledge to take a minimum of 24 rides on Metro by 2024. CCA is also partnering with Metro and Downtown businesses to improve the 7th Street/Metro Center Station - read the press release at ccala.org/7thMetro.
